In the UK there are 4.7 million businesses. Many employ less than 50 people (2007 BERR statistics). They do not have the time or the resources to find an outlet for their unwanted stock; the skip is all too often the easiest option.

The number of people living in low-income households is now 13.4m, the highest level since 2000.

The latest available figures show the number of children living in low-income households at 4 million in 2007/08.
The UK has one of the highest levels of homelessness in Europe with more than 4 people per 1,000 estimated to be homeless. There are more than 9,000 services, such as hostels, day centres and other advice and support services for homeless people and those at risk of homelessness.

The total number of women supported by domestic violence services in England on a typical day is 11,310. This has increased by 50% since 2003. On a typical day, 3,615 women and 3,580 children are resident in refuge accommodation in England. This is an increase of 12% over the past four years. 50% of these children are aged under five.
There are six million carers in the UK (including children and young people), and with an ageing population and people with learning disabilities and illnesses living longer, the numbers are increasing. Within a decade it is expected that there will be 13 million carers in the UK.

1 in 3 carers are unable to return to work because the right alternative care is not available. 1 in 5 carers are forced to give up work because of their caring responsibilities and can end up isolated and living in poverty.
