news > 25/09/2013 - Interning at Giving World

Parvinder

Giving World's marketing intern, Parvinder, has been working with us for the past year and we are grateful for all her work. She has written about the benefits she has also gained from her time here.

"A lot of people think that being an intern means being sent to make tea, but there's a lot more to the job than that. An internship with Giving World to me is best explained as a stepping stone into the working world and has offered many opportunities. Having studied in a Marketing background it has given me greater insight into my chosen industry, as well as provided professional experience. It has allowed me to discover whether I actually enjoy the industry before committing to a long term position. Furthermore working for Giving World and having a visible presence has provided me with the opportunity to network with industry professionals, giving a priceless directory of contacts.

"Having graduated with no actual practice in the marketing field, I needed to gain some experience and Giving World was here to provide that. Some valuable things I have learnt from working at Giving World are how to confidently speak on the phone to beneficiaries, how to effectively write emails, case studies and minutes from meetings, how to collect, analyse and manage data, as well as work well in a team.  Although I am an intern, I'm never forgotten; alongside my regular database management, I also get assigned a variety of other tasks and roles. It's amazing to be given the opportunity to just do - and to be responsible and in control for particular pieces of work.

"Personally, I really enjoy working here. Working with a team I get along with, can trust and have good communication with, which is important considering how much time we spend together. Being around people who are as eager and willing as I am really helps the working environment and makes me feel at ease.

"I've learnt so much at Giving World that I could never have learnt from books or what people say. From advice from my colleagues, to words of wisdom I've overheard, I'm always soaking up invaluable information that I'll keep with me forever, this I believe can only happen when you're immersed in the environment full-time.

"From gaining all this valuable experience whilst working here I have now gained a job working for the NHS, this has opened many doors for me and my future in the marketing industry and I have Giving World to thank for that."
